Student Athlete Health
Injury & Illness Monitoring
At BWC Academy, athlete health and safety are a top priority. We have systems in place to ensure injured or ill student-athletes receive the care, support, and communication they need.
On-Site Athletic Therapy
Burnaby Winter Club’s Academy Staff includes a full-time Certified Athletic Therapist who provides injury assessment, rehabilitation, and on-site coverage during practices and games. They work closely with coaches and staff to support safe return-to-play protocols and ensure the well-being of every athlete.
Daily Monitoring
Injured athletes complete daily health check-ins with our Athletic Therapist, who tailors adjustments based on the nature and severity of each injury or illness. This ongoing monitoring ensures recovery is carefully tracked and managed with professional oversight.
Parent Communication
Parents are kept informed when:
- An athlete is injured or ill for an extended period.
- There are updates or changes to the athlete’s health status.
- The athlete requires medical attention (e.g., physician visits, walk-in clinics, ER visits).
- This is especially important for families living out of town, ensuring they are updated every step of the way from our Athletic Therapists.
Billeting Program
Billeting Program
BWC Academy proudly offers a comprehensive Billeting Program for our out-of-town student-athletes, ensuring they live in a safe, supportive, and structured home environment while attending school and training.
A Home Away From Home
Our Billeting Program is overseen by Billet Coordinator Christine Bigelow, who carefully matches student-athletes with welcoming, trusted families from within our program and broader community.
We prioritize:
- Safe, family-oriented homes
- Strong communication between billet families, athletes, and staff
- Homes that support the student-athlete’s academic, athletic, and personal growth
Why Billeting Matters
Living with a billet family helps athletes:
- Transition smoothly into their new environment
- Learn independence and responsibility
- Build meaningful relationships that often last a lifetime
Billeting is more than housing — it’s about becoming part of a supportive extended family that contributes to a student-athlete’s overall development and well-being.
